Brief Overview

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - BA (Honours) - Philosophy

A BA in Philosophy examines our most basic concepts that not only are the foundation of how we understand the world but also of every other discipline including the sciences, social sciences and the arts. With training in the art of argument, philosophy at Alliance will allow students to think clearly, rigorously and independently.  Philosophy will help in solving problems systematically from first principles, imagine possible scenarios and be able to critically evaluate ideas, leading to effective innovation. In every area of human enquiry, academic or non-academic, students will have the tools to think through conceptual confusion, sort out good reasoning from bad and communicate persuasively and logically.

Philosophy occurs when we think of our most fundamental questions. What is beauty, truth, justice and knowledge? Are we in control of our choices?  Is time travel possible?  What makes an action right or wrong? What is the best society and political system? What distinguishes science from pseudoscience? How does the mind relate to the body? In the course of asking questions like these, students will be informed by subjects as diverse as neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, physics, literature and economics.

Classroom learning will be complemented by activities like debating, popularizing philosophy at schools, developing philosophical content for online consumption as well as running a Philosophical Society. Empowered with thinking skills from philosophy and a unique interdisciplinary rigour, students will be equipped to face a broad range of careers in a changing and challenging world. A philosophy major will lead to successful careers in law, corporate sector, journalism, edtech, film-making, politics and teaching.
